Owning a Bernese
Mountain Dog can be one of the most wonderful and rewarding
experiences of your life, but these dogs are not for everyone and do
not flourish in many environments. Please research this breed before
you consider purchasing a Berner.
The
best way to decide if a Bernese Mountain Dog is right for you is to
discuss the breed with people who have experience owning a Berner.
There are Berner club activities and dog shows in your area that you
can attend and these functions provide the opportunity to speak with
the people who know the breed, the owners and breeders. The GCSBMDC
has contacts that you can speak with in person and the “Showing”
link on this site gives the dates for Arizona Dog Shows. There are
many excellent links that discuss the pros and cons of owning a
Bernese Mountain Dog and they should be researched in detail before
considering adding a Berner to your family.
Listed below are a few links to
look at to learn more about the breed:
The Bernese Mountain Dog, as with
all breeds, is a product of its breeding and genetic history. If
you are considering purchasing a Bernese Mountain Dog, please make
sure you are completely familiar with its bloodlines and its
breeding history. Reputable breeders will have bloodlines documented
for at least 3 generations and these will be available upon request.
These documented bloodlines will also be required to register your
dog with the AKC once it is purchased. At a minimun, to ensure that
the breeders you are working with are producing quality and healthy
animals that will exhibit the traits inherent in the breed, is to
check to see if the breeder is using only dogs that are registered
with the
American Kennel Club
(AKC). Although there are other organizations that register a few
specific types of dogs, the AKC is the accepted governing
organization that tracks and documents all purebred Bernese Mountain
Dogs. Whether you have chosen to purchase a pet or show dog, I can
not emphasize enough that you need to check your potential puppy’s
breeding history to ensure you are receiving a healthy purebred
Bernese Mountain Dog.
